SC Ph.D. student Michelle Perry has been selected to attend the European-US HPC Summer School in Dublin, Ireland, June 24-28, 2012. The award was based on Perry’s research which focuses on constructing and optimizing Bayesian Neural Networks and their application to High Energy Physics data. By attending the week-long seminar, Perry will augment her knowledge of her own research area and become better acquainted with other research areas in computational science.

Ph.D. student Dan Lu has been awarded a Student Travel Fellowship to attend the annual Principal Investigator meeting of the Subsurface Biogeochemical Research unit of the Department of Energy. The meeting will be held April 30 – May 2, 2012 in Washington, DC, and is intended to provide an opportunity for Principal Investigators to discuss successes, problems, and challenges of their research. The meeting is attended by PIs and their associates.

Scientific Computing doctoral students Olmo Zavala-Romero and Andrew Young received awards for their entries in the DigiTech gallery of student exhibits. The event was held at the William Johnston Building on March 30th, and showcased the best exhibits exemplifying student innovation with technology.

Ph.D. student Guannan Zhang was recently awarded the Alston S. Householder Fellowship in Scientific Computing. The fellowship honors Dr. Alston S. Householder, founding Director of the Computer Science and Mathematics Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and recognizes his seminal research contributions to the fields of numerical analysis and scientific computing.
