"Thermo-Fluid Dynamics Study of the Land-Atmosphere Interaction"

Abstract:

Understanding the complex interactions of the local terrain morphology, materials, and surface heat release with the local wind conditions is important in addressing issues at the interface of the land surface and the lower atmosphere. This talk covers numerical investigations of atmospheric flow and heat transport over complex natural and manmade terrains to understand the nature and address problems such as pollution dispersion and control, safety, energy harvesting, and energy use. The results demonstrate that only local scale simulations for specific terrains and climates can explain the dynamics and effects of local air flow and heat transport, with often surprising outcomes.
